Did you know that out of all pets over 2 years old, seventy to eighty-five percent of them have some degree of periodontal disease? It’s important to understand what that means for your pet’s health and how to go about fixing it. We offer low-cost dental care for Prescott area pets so that they can live a healthy, pain-free life by your side.
WHAT IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE?
Just like in people, periodontal disease is an inflammation (or infection) of the gums and the bone around your pet’s teeth. The infection is caused by bacteria that have taken up residence in your pet’s mouth, building up into a layer of soft plague that hardens and turns into tartar as time goes on. You might notice that your pup or kitty has bad breath or that their gums are starting to look a little swollen and inflamed. Left untreated, they may need to have teeth extracted to prevent further pain and damage. It’s important to understand that periodontal disease is not just a danger to their teeth, though. Once the bacteria makes its way under the gums, it can easily get into the bloodstream and harm an animal’s internal organs, such as the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. That’s why it’s so important to bring your pet in for regular dental care here in Prescott.
